I think we can all agree, when we read something that moves us, we want to tell everyone about it. I have read many self-help books throughout my life where some were alright and some I continuously re-read because there are just that good! I wanted to share my top favorite self-helps books that have helped me, in hopes that they may help you too.
Untethered Soul
When I tell you this booked changed my life, I truly mean it. When I picked up this book, I was in one of the darkest places and times of my life. I felt completely hopeless and lonely with no faith of life getting better. I picked up this book after hearing about it through social media and was intrigued with the authors description and meaning behind this book.
Who are you really?
In life there are certain situations and circumstances that shake us to our core. We often limit goals and dreams due to ego, fear, lack of confidence, and prior life experiences. But what if there was no limit and we can go beyond what we have ever imagined? Michael A Singer teaches you how to explore who you really are, define what limitations are holding you back, and what you can do to overcome them. You’ll be able to understand your emotions and why you’re having them. You’ll get clarity on your soul’s purpose and limitations you have put on yourself that are holding you back. Finally, he discusses freeing yourself from these discouraging limitations, healing the hurt within you and mending a relationship with yourself. This book has been a book that I have re-read multiple times and get something new out of it each time. I have lended it to many friends who in turn have said how much it has helped them. This book offers comforting words and guidance with questions that will really cause you to go within. As much as your ego will tell you otherwise, you are not alone on this journey of life.
The Mountain Is You
Brianna Wiest is one of a kind and her writing is life changing. This book points out life experiences that change us, and how we react to them. She walks you through how you are feeling, what you are thinking, and gives you a different perspective to look at. There were many times in this book where it felt like she was talking directly to me. Brianna covers all things of life: family, love, breakups, job loss, trauma, anxiety, and so much more. At the end of the day, most things in life aren’t happening TO you, they are happening FOR you. Often, we have a hard time differentiating what is in our minds and what is reality. Your thoughts and feelings can make you believe what you’re feeling is real. This book guides you to acknowledge your thoughts and feelings, and how to not let them overpower you. The hardest times in our life, the happiest times in our life, and the sad times in our life, all make us who we are. One day you will look back and understand it’s not always how big the mountain is, often, it’s realizing the mountain you’ve been fighting, is you.
The Body Keeps The Score
If you have suffered through any kind of trauma, I strongly recommend this book. My therapist recommended it to me when I was healing from surviving a mass shooting. When I picked up this book, I had no faith that it would help me. To my surprise, this booked had me on my knees. Most people can hear what you went through, but they truly don’t fully understand. With this book, I felt like “someone gets it”. I felt less alone in surviving when I learn more about why I feel the way I do. You mind often suppresses traumatic memories to protect you. Overtime, with therapy, those memories come to the forefront. As one can expect, it often feels like surviving a traumatic event is never ending. It can be a very lonely and overwhelming feeling. I was able to learn why these emotions happen and understanding my triggers from a deeper perspective. Trauma doesn’t always just affect your brain, but also the body and mind. Trauma can be stored anywhere in your body and can present itself whenever it pleases. Dr. Van Der Kolk shows the connection between hurting to healing. The journey itself is not always linear, but it is well worth it in the end.
